I was the girl who had a solid gym routine and a calories in v.s. calories out mindset when it came to fitness and weight loss. I love to eat food that tastes good! Who doesn’t?! When I wanted to get healthier, what I began to learn is that our food industry wants you to keep coming back to their restaurant. So how do they do that? A lot of restaurants and fast-food chains will add addictive ingredients such as MSG to enhance the flavor of the foods on their menu so that you are hooked and become a life-long customer. When I learned this, it helped me to become aware of what I was eating and that I didn’t have a food problem. It wasn’t 100% my fault that I had difficulty controlling what I ate and that I struggled to lose weight. With the advice of my functional medicine practitioner, I began to change my diet to a more whole-foods based diet. This didn’t happen overnight by any means. Breaking food addictions for good is really hard and takes time. There were times when I failed and ate fast-food. But what I didn’t do afterwards was punish myself or shame myself for that failure. I enjoyed that treat meal and then looked ahead to the next meal where I could get back on track. Staying focused on my long-term goal of being healthy from the inside out helped me to follow through.
Over many months, I did break those food addictions and learned that healthy food can taste just as good as the unhealthy, addictive foods I used to eat. As a result of breaking these food addictions, I began to lose weight. Finally! It was such a satisfying feeling for my clothes to become looser and for the number on the scale to go down. It was so fun to buy new clothes when my old ones didn’t fit anymore! I share this with you because these results were truly a byproduct of my hard work and my mindset of wanting to be healthier. My mindset was not only to lose weight. When I started changing my diet, I thought it would be a huge accomplishment if I lost 15 pounds. I could hardly believe what I was seeing when many months later, the scale showed that I had lost 48 pounds. My focus on my health was greater than my desire to lose weight and I firmly believe that lead to a greater weight loss. If my focus had solely been on weight loss, I believe that I would’ve gotten more frustrated along my journey and given up sooner.
If my story resonates with you, then know that I can help you on your health journey as well.
